Adopted dog wakes up rescuer in the middle of the night to thank her!

Niya is a gorgeous dog that was abandoned by her previous owner. Once she arrived at Gibson County Animal Shelter, she completely shut down in her kennel.

It was obvious to the staff that she had previously been abused. Thankfully — one rescuer was about to change her life.

Luckily for Niya, Kimberly Sloan, a rescuer with the Arrow Animal Rescue organization, decided to bring her home one evening. After getting a closer look at Niya, Sloan realized how much abuse this dog went through.

There was a gash above her eye that looked like it was caused by a heavy tool of some sort. There were also cuts on her snout, which were injuries that Sloan had seen before when someone puts a tin can as a muzzle.

All of these were just the external injuries.

When Sloan first arrived at the shelter to pick Niya up and bring her to her new foster home, she was deathly afraid. She was so scared she couldn’t move and her tail was pulled all the way through her legs.

They had to pick up the 47-pound dog and carry her to her Sloan’s car. Niya had no idea that Sloan was her rescuer, all she knew was that she was scared.

Upon first arriving at Sloan’s foster home, Niya still wasn’t comfortable with being around her new rescuer and mom. She decided to curl up in a corner; she slept all day, all night, and then into the next day some more.

However, it was on the second night that sweet Niya really started to make some progress in her new home. While Sloan was asleep that night, she felt warm breath against her hand — it was Niya.

Niya pressed her nose into Sloan’s hand as if she was showing her rescuer that she was happy to be there — even if she wasn’t showing it before. It was such a sweet and endearing moment, you could tell that she was finally beginning to relax.

“She just breathed into my hand and I woke up and immediately paid attention to her, petting her and talking to her,” Sloan tells a fellow website. ” She smiled and leaned in.”

Niya returned to her bed, but a few minutes later, it happened again.

“A couple of hours later, the same thing,” Slown recalls. “It was overwhelming. I was crying.”

If Niya’s progress with her rescuer is any indication of how she’s going to be in a few weeks or months, she’s going to be a real love bug. Imagine how many wonderful moments you could have with Niya!
